ODU Health Sciences Building

Norfolk, VA

Old Dominion University’s Ellmer College of Health Sciences is a 128,000-square-foot multidisciplinary facility bringing healthcare education, research, and community care together under one roof. The three-story building houses specialized teaching and research laboratories, simulation and collaborative learning spaces, and two public-facing clinics serving the Hampton Roads community. Designed to support ODU’s growing health sciences programs, the facility creates an environment where students, faculty, clinicians, and patients come together for hands-on learning, research, and care.

Structural System

The structure consisted of a concrete slab on metal deck supported by composite steel beams spanning to steel columns. The structural system was designed for specific vibration criteria associated with medical equipment located throughout the building. The foundation system consisted of concrete grade beams and pile caps supported by precast prestressed concrete piles.

BSG’s founder served as the Structural Project Engineer during previous professional employment.
