Chesapeake Dismal Swamp Visitor Center

Chesapeake, VA

The new Visitor Center serves as a centerpiece of Chesapeake’s Historical Village at the Dismal Swamp, a cultural destination created to preserve and share the remarkable history of the Great Dismal Swamp and its surrounding communities. Located along the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail, the approximately 3,900-square-foot facility provides exhibit and orientation spaces that introduce visitors to the region’s history—from Indigenous communities and the development of the historic canal to Maroon communities and the Underground Railroad.

The Visitor Center anchors a larger historical site that includes the restored Cornland School, outdoor interpretive exhibits, and educational spaces. Together, the Village creates a new destination where visitors can experience stories deeply connected to Chesapeake’s history while exploring one of the region’s most historically and environmentally significant landscapes.

Structural System

The Visitor Center utilizes a combination of conventional wood framing and custom timber trusses, creating the distinctive roof forms that contribute to the building’s architectural character. The roof framing is supported by wood bearing walls founded on shallow concrete foundations, with a conventional concrete slab-on-grade at the first floor.

“Having worked with Joe on the rehabilitation of the Cornland School and the new Visitor Center at the Chesapeake Historical Village at the Dismal Swamp, a local historically significant municipal project, I can easily say that Joe has done well for the project by demonstrating an excellence in problem-solving through critical structural solutions. His consistent responsiveness to address arising detail challenges and timely field inspections added value. A project can go that much more smoothly with an engineer like Joe Beauchamp on the team.”
