Double Tree Exterior Canopy and Entrance Modifications

Midlothian, VA

A new signature entrance canopy was designed as part of improvements to the existing DoubleTree Hotel in Midlothian, Virginia, creating a more welcoming and visually distinctive experience. The approximately 30-foot-wide canopy provides coverage over the new concrete entrance stair and ADA-accessible ramp while serving as a prominent architectural feature.

The structural steel canopy uses multiple cantilevers to achieve the architectural form and maintain an open, elegant appearance with minimal supports. Cantilevered steel columns provide lateral stability, while the foundations were carefully positioned away from the existing building to avoid conflicts with the hotel’s foundations. The result is a lightweight, expressive structure that combines accessibility, weather protection, and architectural character in a new focal point for the property.

Structural System

The new canopy structure consisted of structural steel framing with cantilevered steel columns acting as the lateral system. The canopy is supported on shallow foundations. The new ramp and stair consisted of a concrete slab on grade.

BSG’s founder served as the Structural Engineer of Record during previous professional employment.
