Redwood Smoke Shack

Suffolk, VA

The new Redwood Smoke Shack in Suffolk transformed the former Bennett’s Creek Farm Market into a destination for the locally grown, Texas-inspired barbecue concept. The renovation reimagined the approximately 5,100-square-foot existing building with expanded dining areas and a dedicated pit room housing six wood-fired smokers.

The structural renovation included demolition and reconstruction of approximately half of the existing building to create the new dining and barbecue smoking areas. New exposed structural steel framing was incorporated as both a functional and visible part of the renovated space. During construction, existing exterior masonry walls were found to be unreinforced, requiring additional structural reinforcement to safely accommodate modifications to the existing walls and parapet. The project required creative integration of new construction with the existing building while preserving the character of a familiar Suffolk landmark.
